Attribution: to the Future Farmers of America, Kansas City Date: Nov. 9, 1978 James Earl Carter, Jr. 1924 - 39th President of the United States (1977-1981). Born in Plains, GA and a graduate of Annapolis (1946). Carter ran his family's peanut farm after serving in the U.S. Navy. In 1962, he was elected to the first of two terms of office in the Georgia Senate. In 1970, he was elected governor of Georgia. Carter won the 1976 presidential elections, defeating incumbent President Gerald R. Ford.
