Attribution: Nathan Hale's last words before being hanged by the British as a spy. Date: September 22, 1776. Nathan Hale 1755-1776
Born in Coventry, CT. He was a young schoolteacher when the American
Revolution broke out. He was commissioned as an officer in the Connecticut
militia and served in the siege of Boston. He volunteered to spy on the
British forces on Long Island, N.Y. He inadvertently revealed his mission to
a former British officer and was captured and hanged without trial. |
